First, notice what kind of material your tub is made of. This is crucial for choosing your cleaning solution. Whatever cleaning solution you choose, be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first to prevent further damage and avoid more terrible staining to specific types of tubs.

Porcelain is a sturdy, stone-like material preferred for bathtubs and sinks. And porcelain can look really dingy if not cleaned and cared for properly. There are effective hard water stain removal products on the market that you can successfully use to clean toughest lime, calcium and rust stains. You can also scrub the affected areas with some abrasive powder like Comet or Ajax and a bit of water.

Enamel surface needs regular cleaning because of its exposure to dirt, body oils, hard water and soap scum. However, acids can wear away the surface, ruining the fine gloss, and abrasive cleansers can scratch, leaving unsightly scuffs. For removing stains from your enamel bathtub you can use any commercial cleaner as long as it does not contain bleach (also be sure to avoid using drain cleaners). Even shampoo or dish-washing soap can do the trick. Scrub gently with a damp sponge. Rinse well to remove any residue. Treat any remaining tough stains with a combination of cream of tartar and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide.

In case you have an acrylic tub, stay far from abrasives like pumice stones or scouring pads. Acrylic tubs require more frequent washing than other tubs. Once a week is usually appropriate. You can use soft cleaners or plain dish-washing liquid with plenty of hot water. For cleaning toughest stains use water-vinegar solution. Spray the affected areas and let the mixture act for half an hour. Scrub with a soft sponge and rinse off.
